ROUNDTABLE WITH LORD ADONIS, CHAIRMAN, NIC

Lord Adonis presented the Interim National Infrastructure Assessment recently announced by the National Infrastructure Commission. This report aims to determine a vision for UK infrastructure up to 2050, to identify long-term infrastructure needs in light of that vision and highlight priority areas for action over the medium term. The session enabled participants to offer their initial, informal feedback on the report. The Forum is preparing a response for the formal consultation process. The final report will inform the NIC's final conclusions on the UK's infrastructure needs and priorities to 2050.

The Rt Hon John Hayes CBE MP, Minister of State at the Department for Transport, joined members of The Infrastructure Forum to discuss the two key challenges faced by the transport sector: skills and technology. These issues were held responsible for the country’s low productivity and capacity. The negative economic conditions due to Brexit meant it was essential to improve the outlook for transport and infrastructure as a whole.

The Infrastructure Forum was delighted to welcome Carolyn Fairbairn, Director General of the Confederation of British Industry, to a special roundtable discussion on the outlook for business for the year ahead. Stakeholders from across infrastructure subsets attended the thought-provoking session, which highlighted the need to regain economic stability for British industry.

The European Financial Forum’s Market Structure Group welcomed Dr Adam Farkas, Executive Director of the European Banking Authority, to a dinner discussion on Monday 25 September 2017. The discussion explored the EBA’s new recommendations for MiFid remuneration legislation.

Effective compensation for consumers who suffer detriment by reason of poor service provision is an issue that has high priority across all regulated sectors of the economy. The subject is challenging and, notwithstanding the efforts of regulators and consumer organisations, many consumers have continued to feel that the problems they have encountered have not been effectively addressed. EPF’s Regulatory Best Practice Group welcomed Lindsey Fussel, Consumer Group Director at Ofcom to a special roundtable to set out Ofcom's research, analysis and proposals in this area.

This year we were delighted to welcome Dr Andrew Sentence CBE, Senior Economist for PricewaterhouseCoopers, Rt Hon Lord Heseltine CH the former Chair of Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission; Lord Adonis, Chair and Phil Graham the Chief Executive of the National Infrastructure Commission; Emma Gilthorpe the Expansion Director at Heathrow Airport, Nick Earle the Senior Vice President at Hyperloop One; Sir Edward Lister, Chairman of the Homes and Communities Agency, Peter Hofbauer the Head of Infrastructure at Hermes Investment Management and Ed Clarke, Co-founder and Director at Infracapital were among many speakers.
